Storytelling Services > Character Creation

We guide you in a journey akin to crafting a character sheet, but for the captivating world of your novel. Together, we explore a spectrum of character development techniques, each designed to infuse your characters with depth, motivations, and unique traits. This process is about more than just outlining characters; it’s about creating souls that resonate throughout your narrative, enhancing the world you’re weaving. With our support, your characters will not only fit into your story’s universe but will feel as real and complex as any legendary hero or villain, ready to embark on their epic adventures.

Character creation is the bedrock of any compelling story. When you begin your novel-writing journey, your characters serve as the initial spark that ignites your narrative. They are the lens through which your readers experience your world and its events. Crafting well-developed characters not only breathes life into your story but also sets the stage for meaningful connections with your audience. By investing in the art of character creation, you lay a solid foundation for a captivating and immersive novel that will resonate with readers long after they’ve turned the last page.

How Does This Work?

We need all the information that you have in mind and together we can add in the flourishes and details to turn each of your characters into a full person that you can use throughout your story. During our storytelling session, we will discuss your characters – even if there is just a quick idea in mind. Then we will move onto a deep dive into their backgrounds, motivations, and personality traits while adding layers of complexity that make them feel like real individuals. We will work closely with you to ensure these characters seamlessly fit into the narrative, which will enhance your storytelling experience. Our main goal is to empower you with characters who not only exist on paper, but also drive your plot, engage your readers and allow your story to come alive.
Here's an example exploration:

Let’s talk about the characters you have in mind for your story.  Have you thought about your main character, what he or she is like and how they’d fit into your novel yet?

Any ideas like their name, appearance, personality?  If you have any ideas about their motivation and goals we can work that into the profile too.

Honestly, I haven’t thought about them much. She should be female, mid-30s and wear glasses. I think it’d be neat if she dyes her hair green and used to date a famous musician, but she’s mysterious and won’t say who it was.

Great! Let’s call her Ava for now, but feel free to change the name if you have something else in mind.  This is your story, so let’s make sure the characters fit what you want.

What do you think if she’s a mid-30s woman with emerald green-dyed hair and glasses, embodying creativity and intellect? Raised in a middle-class, art-loving family, she’s a graphic designer or writer, known for her dry humor and observational skills. Ava’s mysterious, especially about her past with a famous musician, fueling intrigue. Her journey in your novel could be about embracing her individuality and confronting her private history, offering a rich, introspective narrative.

I like that! But maybe she comes from a rich family instead, but she was scorned because of her non-conformist ways?

What do you think if Ava is a mid-30s woman from a wealthy background, distinguished by her emerald green-dyed hair and glasses, symbolizing her non-conformist spirit? Despite her affluent upbringing, she often found herself at odds with her family’s traditional values, leading her to pursue a creative career, possibly as a graphic designer or writer. Ava’s known for her sharp wit and keen observational skills, but she maintains a shroud of mystery, particularly regarding her past relationship with a famous musician. In the novel, Ava’s journey could explore her quest for authenticity against her privileged yet restrictive background, offering a layered and introspective narrative.

That sounds like her! I think that’s exactly who I’d want as a main character of my story.

Great! Let me set you up with a character sheet about her so you can refer back to what we talked about and details regarding Ava throughout your story. Remember, this is a first draft and she’ll develop even more during your telling of her story, so be sure to add in notes for yourself!

We then take this info and create a character sheet for you!
Character Profile

Name: Ava (surname can be decided later, depending on the setting and cultural background).

Age: Mid-30s.

Appearance: Ava has a striking appearance with shoulder-length hair dyed an emerald green, hinting at her unconventional and bold personality. She wears glasses, which add to her intellectual demeanor. Ava has a medium build and an expressive face, often found with a thoughtful or mischievous expression.

Background: Ava grew up in an upper-class family with a strong emphasis on creativity and self-expression. Her parents were not very supportive of her artistic endeavors; they were more conventional in their own careers. She has a few close friends who value her for her authenticity and wit.

Personality: Ava is a blend of mystery and charisma. She’s highly intelligent, a bit reserved, and has a dry sense of humor. While she enjoys social gatherings, she often finds herself observing people rather than engaging. This trait makes her an excellent judge of character.

Profession and Skills: Ava’s profession can be something that allows her creativity to flourish. Perhaps she’s a graphic designer, a writer, or an independent art curator. She has a keen eye for detail and a love for the arts.

Motivations and Goals: Ava might be driven by a desire to create something meaningful or to find her own place in the world, apart from her rumored association with a famous musician. She’s motivated by personal growth and the pursuit of authenticity.

Challenges and Flaws: Ava’s mysterious nature sometimes puts her at odds with others who wish to get closer to her. Her reluctance to talk about her past, especially her relationship with the famous musician, often leads to speculation and rumors.

Role in the Story: As the main character, Ava’s journey could involve uncovering something about herself, exploring her past, or embarking on a creative venture that challenges her beliefs and values.

Relationships: She might have a small but close circle of friends who respect her privacy. Her romantic past, especially with an unnamed celebrity musician, adds an element of intrigue to her character.

Character Arc: Ava’s story might involve her learning to open up more about her past, finding peace with her identity, and embracing her individuality without the shadow of her famous ex.

This is just a starting point, and you can tweak or expand any of these aspects to better fit the story you’re envisioning.
